GPX4 - Glutathione Peroxidase4, is the only glutathione peroxidase gene located exclusively in the mitochondria. It takes the exhaust products of SOD2, hydrogen peroxide, and turns it into water. If mutated, inhibited, or non functioning, GPX4, can lead to ferroptosis - unmitigated cell death.
